October 2001

In honor of the victims of the September 11th attack, there is no
'Tard of the Month this month.  Come to think of it, I'm not sure if
there will ever be another 'Tard of the Month again.  I know that we're
all supposed to get on with it and live our lives as normally as we can.
But let's face it, September 11th changed everything.  I mean, who
am I to complain about anything?  Are there still people out there who
drive like complete idiots?  Of course there are.  But who am I to
complain about the inconvenience of having my commute delayed a
half hour by a bunch of rubberneckers?  Who am I to complain about
being cut off by some yahoo on a cell phone?  Who am I to complain
about anything when my loved ones are safe, I have a roof over my
head and a job to go to?  Moronic driving is still a problem; it probably
always will be.  Three and half years ago, I started this website because
I thought that it'd be good for a laugh.  One day soon, God willing, bad
driving will be good for a laugh once again.  But not right now, not yet.
My heart's just not in it anymore.

Postscript 10/02/01:
I've received a good number of e-mails over the last couple of days from
people telling me how much they enjoy TotM and how disappointed
they'd be if I stopped updating this site.  I am quite touched by the
encouragement and very grateful for it.  I also agree with the main
sentiment that many of you have expressed; namely, that if we don't
learn to move on, then we might as well admit defeat.  So from next
month onward, TotM will be back.  Granted, it will never be 100%
the same again.  I think all of our mundane, day to day worries -- be it
the antics of some of our fellow drivers or the number of weeds on our
lawns -- will forever seem trivial and petty in the shadow of the WTC
tragedy.  But that doesn't mean we stop laughing.  It doesn't mean we
stop poking fun at ourselves and others.  If anything, we need levity
now more than ever before, for laughter is indeed the best medicine.
